Board of Education Elections

Out with the old in with the new–the old being the current Board of Education members and the new being the candidates voted in on November 7th. The people of East Amwell Township, Raritan Township, and Readington Township have each elected or re-elected a Board of Education member. For East Amwell, they chose Christopher Sobieski, for Raritan Township, they re-elected Kathryn Raborn, and Readington Township picked Lisa Hughes; these new members will be sworn in on January 2nd, 2018.
Starting off, Lisa Hughes has three sons, two of which are currently at Readington Middle School (RMS), and their eldest son will attend Hunterdon Central Regional High School next fall. Hughes states that she has a “strong interest” to make sure that Hunterdon Central will be a “safe, supportive and positive place.” In addition, Hughes has a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Comparative Literature from NYU, and a law degree from Seton Hall University School of Law.
On her Facebook account, Hughes stated that if she was elected, her primary goal would be “to ensure that our children have an exceptional high school experience by returning Hunterdon Central to the academic excellence of a Blue Ribbon school.” Hunterdon Central Regional High School has recently lost its prized Blue Ribbon award, and Lisa Hughes has made it her goal to get it back. On top of attempting to gain the award back, she is wants “to ensure that Hunterdon Central is making prudent financial decisions while being accountable to the taxpayers.”
Kathryn Raborn, in a nj.com article, says herself and her family, “have participated, volunteered and contributed to various organizations, including; Cub Scout Pack 194, The Greater Flemington Soccer Club (GFSC), Flemington Raritan Baseball, I Heart NJ Girl Scout Council, Flemington Raritan School District PTOs, and the HCRHS Orchestra Parent Group. We are also longtime members of St. Magdalene Parish.” Raborn continues to cite her volunteer work in various organizations around her local community, as well as talking about her life, and profession, which includes working at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Raborn finishes off her interview by noting that she wants to help the community with her re-election, saying that she is “committed” to “bringing the same principles and integrity that have guided me in the past”.
Last but not least, the new member for East Amwell is Christopher Sobieski. On one of his Facebook accounts, he says that he is an “alumni of both East Amwell Township and Hunterdon Central High School” and cites his experience at Central as a reason he can help. His Facebook post continues to talk about how he “knows what it takes to succeed as a young person in today’s world.” He continues to say that he wants to “ensure that the next generation of students can succeed as well.”
