The Oscars, also known as the Academy Awards, are a very important part of television as we know it. Many actors/actresses, writers, directors, costume designers, etc., win yearly prestigious awards. Many different movies were nominated for this year’s Oscars, such as Barbie, Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, Anatomy of the Fall, American Fiction, The Holdovers, Past Lives, etc.
Best Motion Picture, Best Actress/Actor, and Best Director are some of the most important awards and the most popular categories during this ceremony. This year, Oppenheimer won Best Picture – taking place during WWII, Robert J. Oppenheimer was hired to work on the top-secret Manhattan Project. Oppenheimer and a team of scientists spent years building the Atomic Bomb. Their work was put to use on July 16, 1945, as many witnessed the world’s first nuclear explosion, forever changing the course of history. Many critics believed Oppenheimer’s win for Best Picture was well deserved. Oppenheimer’s cast won other Oscars, such as Best Director and Best Actor. This is mindblowing, considering that Oppenheimer has won many Oscars overall.
One of the other factors to people tuning into the Oscars was the focus on Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling at this year’s Oscars— many people found it a fascinating movie parallel they had at the Oscar’s to scenes in La La Land, which also won many Oscars in 2018. TikTok went crazy over their exchange when Emma Stone won an Oscar for Best Actress in the movie Poor Things and Gosling had a similar exchange to a scene that occurred in La La Land.
Although many people get nominated each year for the Oscars, there can only be one winner. Many famous actors and actresses who are popular and accomplished won many Oscars which is a massive achievement in an acting career. Many of these films were fiercely competitive and the performances ranged from subtle performances, like Past Lives, to very bold and bright, like Barbie. Behind the scenes, the technical achievements of filmmakers were also recognized and celebrated. Numerous people raved over Barbie when it first came out in theaters because it was funny, enjoyable, and relatable. People watched it hoping to get a sense of their childhood through the movie. Some either loved it or hated it. Barbie won a few Oscars and helped teach our world about feminism and how Barbies impacted our world. While this could have easily been an advertisement from Mattel to help sell more Barbies, many people were significantly impacted by this movie. Mattel did end up having a significant rise in Barbie sales and even sold Barbies that were shown in the movie.
In the film Barbie, Margot Robbie plays the stereotypical Barbie, in the film she starts to get flat feet, which is a very significant problem in the Barbie world. She visits weird Barbie in hopes of her solving her sad thoughts and everything else acting out. Weird Barbie tells Barbie she must go to the real world to connect with her owner in order to restore the Barbie world. As the audience watches this movie they are shown heartfelt messages and given advice from older women.
The Oscars are a very important ceremony that shines a light on significant movies that have taken off in our world. This helps give directors, actors, and actresses the recognition they deserve. Claiming an Oscar is a lifetime achievement and is one of the most important awards an actor, actress, director, writer, etc, can receive. Barbie, Oppenheimer, and The Killers of Flower Moon are only a few award-winning movies that have won Oscars at the 2024 Academy Awards. Everyone should take the time to watch the movies that won Oscars this year and hopefully enjoy them as much as many of the other critics had overall this year.
