If you’re out of luck thinking of things to do this winter season, here is a list of some of the best places to visit and things to do! From ice skating to holiday lights, there are things to do for everyone. Even though Flemington may be a small town at heart, there are more than a few opportunities to go out with friends and family, while embracing the chilly weather.
Ice Skating
The Flemington Ice Arena is the perfect place to spend a fun day with friends or family! Ice skating is a great way to relieve stress and stay active during the colder months. There are plenty of public-skating sessions to choose from and lots of fun-themed public skates. Plus with the chilly weather outside, it won’t feel that much colder in the rink! Don’t forget to grab a pair of skates and head out onto the rink!
Winter Sports
For the sports enthusiasts among us, the winter sports season at Hunterdon Central has been gearing up since November. Some fan favorites include basketball and ice hockey but there are a multitude of other sports to choose from as well. We have a girls’ and boys’ swim team, the bowling team, and, of course, the fencers, too (amongst many other incredible athletes!) Sports games are a great way to stay active and involved in the Hunterdon Central community during the winter. Take a look at the sports schedule (linked here: https://hcrhsathletics.com/events), and the game theme and show up for your fellow Red Devils!
Holiday Concerts at Hunterdon Central
For more local fun at Hunterdon Central, see the Holiday Instrumental and Choir Concerts. Each year the Orchestra and Band classes put on a combined holiday concert. Some selections from the previous Holiday concert include favorites like the Polar Express and the Nutcracker. “Every winter the orchestra never fails to put on an amazing holiday performance; we work so hard in collaboration with the band to become a solid unit. It really helps bring students together no matter their musical background,” says Izzy Schroeder, first chair Cellist.
The Choir classes also held a combined Holiday concert where favorites like Christmas Valentine and Rockin Around the Christmas Tree were sung this past year. Additionally, the Tri-M Music Honor Society hosted a great winter event, “Carols and Cocoa”. Students involved in Tri-M collaborated to create group performances with their combined musical talents, while the audience sang along and sipped decadent hot chocolate. If you missed this year’s exciting celebrations don’t miss seeing them next year!
Drive-Thru Holiday Light Shows
We know everybody knows about drive-in movies, but have you heard of drive-thru holiday lights? The perfect way to get into a more festive spirit is to do a drive-thru of the holiday lights up around Hunterdon County! Take the time to appreciate neighbors’ hard work nearby, in the comfort of your own car. Places like Main Street in Flemington transform into a Holiday Wonderland and are sure to make an unforgettable night for you to enjoy.
Peddler’s Village
If you want to adventure across state lines, Peddler’s Village in Pennsylvania is the perfect reason to do it! The light displays and quaint little shops are picture-perfect, with places to go for everyone. Every year, there is a gingerbread house competition and display including more than 100 entries. Don’t worry about missing it either, because this year it will be up until January 19th! Or if eating sweets is more your style, Peddler’s Village has many stores, food trucks, and hot cocoa stands located throughout. If you are looking for something going into the New Year, Fire and Frost Fun is a must-see. It features dozens of dazzling ice sculptures and live fire artistry performances. Fire and Frost Fun will take place on January 10, 11, 17, and 18th from 4:00-8:00 p.m.
Whatever you choose to do this winter, make sure it makes you happy to make the most of this winter season! Even though the cold can be a downer sometimes, there are so many great activities to do to lift your spirits.
