Recently, the Tri-M Music Honor Society performed their “All That Jazz” showcase. The Tri-M Music Honor Society is one of the many music programs that Hunterdon Central has to offer. This group is a national organization that gives musical performances throughout the community and even offers musical tutoring after school. Hunterdon Central provides various different musical education programs including clubs such as Chorale, Jazz Band, and Marching Band, as well as in-school classes such as Percussion, Choir, Orchestra, and many more.
The importance of having a music program in schools is significant. Music education has been considered a crucial part of a well-rounded education. However, in many school systems, it can be seen as unimportant or an afterthought. Having music education classes in school is just one way students can express themselves outside of class while also helping students develop disciplinary and time management skills. With these programs, students are able to express themselves in ways that traditional academics may not be able to give them.
Being a part of a music program in school can give students an opportunity to express themselves through music and creativity. They are able to foster long-term relationships and habits that they might not otherwise learn. In addition, music education is important due to its positive impact on cognitive development by enhancing memory, attention, and problem-solving skills. Learning an instrument or participating in a musical ensemble requires a large amount of work and consistent practice, often on a daily basis. In order to perform well in music, students must learn how to incorporate practice into their daily schedule. Self-motivation and accountability are not easy, especially for high school students. Consistent practice and dedication is crucial for students who want to improve their musical skills.
Music education also allows students to be exposed to different kinds of traditions and cultures from around the world. It provides them with the opportunity to explore different genres and styles of music, as well as gain in-depth knowledge about other cultures. Learning about the culture and historical context behind music can help students connect with the music pieces they are playing and allow them to gain a deeper understanding of the music itself. When in music class, students are often introduced to many different music genres that explore different customs and traditions. This, however, does not just end with listening to diverse music, but also with playing instruments from across the globe. When students are exposed to music beyond their own culture, they begin to appreciate global diversity and understand the universal form of expression that music allows.
Beyond academics, having music classes in schools can help students create a sense of community and belonging. Music serves as an outlet for many students, and can help them express themselves when words are difficult to find. Allowing students to showcase their personalities through music can allow them to have an outlet outside of their regular academics where they feel safe and understood. Whether it’s Jazz Band, Orchestra, or other musical groups, students have the opportunity to collaborate with each other and learn more about music together. Students can work with peers who share similar goals, and together as a group they can build a sense of pride and accomplishment.
Musical Education plays an essential role in shaping students’ social, academic, and emotional development. Music also allows students to learn more about other cultures that they would not have learned otherwise; music classes serve as a way of self-expression and belonging through shared musical experiences. By allowing students to work and collaborate together, the music and performing arts curriculum is creating a community at Hunterdon Central that will stay for years to come.
