Local Pizza Showdown: Lenny’s, Panatieri’s, & Sorella’s

New Jersey has a plethora of pizza options, but which is the best?
New Jersey has a plethora of pizza options, but which is the best?

The basic combination of dough, sauce, and cheese has been one that’s captured the world’s soul. Whether as a Friday night birthday celebration or the comfort food after a sour loss, pizza has been a staple item of the American diet for decades. Part of this is thanks to its ever-increasing ubiquity. No matter where you go, you’re bound to have a shop ready to serve you with that saucey-cheesey goodness. Flemington, New Jersey, is no exception. Throughout this town are countless pizzerias, cooking up some of the greatest in the state. But which is the best? For this article, I will determine this by examining their distance from Hunterdon Central, the scenery, and, of course, the pizza. At each restaurant, I will order one slice of pepperoni. So, let’s get this started.

One of these pizza places is Lenny’s. Located right off Voorhees Corner Road, by Route 202, slightly under a mile from Hunterdon Central. After going into a small strip mall, you arrive at the restaurant. Walk through the glass doors and make your way inside. There are places to sit, but not many. Three booths and a few chairs by the sides are all to be found. I ordered one slice of pepperoni and ate it in the restaurant. The furniture is comfortable, and the food came out quickly. The slice had a nice texture and was warmed up well. The cheese tasted great, and the pepperoni was clearly their strong suit. Overall, it was a great experience.

Another pizzeria is Sorellas, located just outside of Flemington in Whitehouse. This restaurant is quite far from Central, being almost twelve miles away. When I pulled into the parking lot, the exterior reminded me of a nice warm pizza oven with a nice pie ready to be eaten. The interior was nice. It was somewhat crowded, but there were enough seats to fit everybody, and they needed every seat. The large crowd can easily be credited to the delicious food and good time offered at Sorellas. Once again, I ordered a slice of pepperoni and sat down in one of the seats. The food came out relatively quickly and tasted great. The cheese and pepperoni were both great and the sauce was sweet and delicious. The crust was nice. It was a great pizzeria.

A third pizzeria in Flemington is Panatieri’s. This is quite close as well, being just under two miles away. Close to a 7/11 this is a home away from home for some. This small pizza tavern has a nice brick exterior, but a somewhat difficult parking lot. The interior is very nice and a nice representation of the pizza. Recently, the whole restaurant was remodeled to what it is today, and it is absolutely better than what it was. There was a good amount of seating down a hallway that led throughout the restaurant. I ordered a third slice of pepperoni pizza, and it came out quite quickly. The pizza had an incredible crust with incredible pepperoni. The sauce and cheese were also quite good.

All three of these pizzerias were great, but one has to be the best. Each restaurant had its advantages and disadvantages. In distance from Central, Lennys’ wins, being the closest. The loser for this is Sorellas, being by far the farthest. On the exterior, the best pizzeria was Lenny’s, being surrounded by a bustling market and a great open parking lot, easy to enter. The worst was Paneteries, having a difficult parking lot and somewhat dirty surroundings. For the interior, the winner was Paneteries. It had fewer seats than Sorellas, but each seat was more comfortable and had more space. The worst was Lenny’s. Although the interior was nice and clean, the lack of seating was what sent it down.

So, which pizza is better? The sauce at Sorellas was the best, being nice and sweet but not overpowering. It served as an efficient layer in the pizza. The worst was the sauce at Panatieri’s. It tasted slightly worse than all the others and was slightly too sweet. For the crust, the best was Panatieri’s. It was fluffy and incredible, a nice addition to the pizza. The worst was Sorellas. It was nice, but too small and lackluster for it to compete with the other two slices and their crusts. The best cheese had to go to Lenny’s. It was hot, tasty, and worked well with the rest of the pizza. The worst was Sorellas. The cheese was great, but once again, it was unable to compete with Panatieri’s and Lenny’s. Finally, the best pepperoni goes to Lenny’s. It was cut very thin and had an incredible taste. The worst pepperoni was from Panatieri’s. It seemed to be slightly burnt from the oven to the point where it stopped tasting like pepperoni. Some may like that taste, but I think it was a detriment to the pizza.

So, for the moment you have all been waiting for, the best pizza in Flemington is…

Lenny’s!

The pizza found in Flemington is great. All of these restaurants were incredible, and each had its qualities and disadvantages. Lenny’s had the best overall experience, from the restaurant to the pizza. The other restaurants were also incredible, having great pizza and great surroundings. Flemington really is a great place for pizza!
