2021: What’s New to the Film Industry

With everyone in quarantine and everything being at a stand-still, a lot of cinematic filmings as well as releases were delayed. With that being said, an abundance of movies are anticipated to be released in 2021. With an interest in comedy, action, drama, horror, or something different, there definitely will be a lot to choose from throughout the upcoming year. Look no further — here are some of the most anticipated movie releases of 2021: 

 

Cinderella

Expected Release: February 5

Who would’ve thought that the classic tale of Cinderella could be reworked and remade so many different times? Well, once again it has been, but this time with cast members like Camilla Cabello and Idina Menzel, the audience will be getting a musical version. This movie will be great for all who are princesses at heart, and those who have enjoyed either the classic Cinderella or any of the modern remakes. 

 

Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Expected Release: March 5

For those who have enjoyed the paranormal plotline of the first 3 Ghostbusters films, the news of this new release should be exciting. With some members of the original cast as well as a new addition of characters and actors, such as Finn Wolfhard, this movie will surely be one to talk about. The film follows a family that discovers that things in their small town aren’t as they seemed. They then find out that they are linked to the original Ghostbusters and need to face the history and their family’s legacy to save their town. 

 

A Quiet Place 2

Expected Release: April 23

For those looking for a thrilling horror movie, similar to both Stranger Things and Bird Box, this one will be a good choice. A Quiet Place 2 starts off right where the first film ended, following the same family as they leave their destroyed home and continue trying to survive the threats of the unknown monsters that have invaded. The film also skips between timelines, acting as a thriller prequel and sequel to the first. 

 

Black Widow

Expected Release: May 7

Black Widow is a new Marvel Studios flick based off of one of the characters from the Marvel Comics. In the film, Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, played by Scarlett Johansson, will have to confront conspiracies tied to her past and fight the forces working to bring her down. This action packed movie will be the 24th part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will be great for those who have enjoyed previous Marvel superhero flicks. 

 

Free Guy

Expected Release: May 21

Free Guy is a comedy/action movie about “Guy,” a bank teller who realizes that he’s actually just a background character of a video game. After this realization, self-aware Guy attempts to become the good guy, leading the real people outside the game to try and shut it down. With a plotline revolving around a video game and the appearance of well known youtubers, this one will be great for anyone who’s interested in gaming or anyone interested in funny films with action-packed scenes.  

 

Cruella

Expected Release: May 28

Like the past Disney favorite Maleficent, Cruella flashes back to the past of a well-known villain, showing her point of view and what led her to her evil and villainous future. The movie follows young Estella as she does whatever it takes to pursue her dream of fashion designing. This thriller will be great for those who have seen the original 101 Dalmatians as well as all Disney lovers. 

 

In the Heights

Expected Release: June 18

In the Heights is a new musical produced by Lin Manuel Miranda about working your way up to achieve your dreams. For fans of Hamilton, you’ll definitely notice a familiar face. The star of the fim, Anthony Ramos, who played both John Laurens and Phillip Hamilton in the Broadway musical Hamilton, will be dancing, singing, and rapping once again, as he plays Usnavi, king of the barrio. This movie should be super exciting for both fans of the Broadway musical and anyone who enjoys music with latin fervor. 

 

Minions: The Rise of Gru

Expected Release: July 2

What more could be wanted than another Minions hit? Minions: The Rise of Gru will flash back to Gru’s childhood and tell the story of his dream of becoming the world’s greatest supervillain. If you haven’t had enough of Gru or his funny and entertaining sidekicks, this movie will be sure to satisfy. 

 

Jungle Cruise

Expected Release: July 30

In the Jungle Cruise, an adventure film starring Dwayne Johnson, Captain Frank Wolff is sent on a mission through the Amazon River in search of an ancient tree in the jungle providing healing powers and medicine. If you’ve ever seen a Dwane Johnson adventure movie, then you know there’s bound to be a lot of thrills. 

 

The Beatles: Get Back

Expected Release: August 27

Lovers of peace, love, and the 60s are in luck, as the new Beatles movie is coming out this year! This film was described by the director as a montage of unseen footage of Paul, John, George, and Ringo. The doc provides a behind the scenes view of the band, including scenes of recording sessions for the Beatles album “Let it Be.” This film will give beloved insight into what it was like making music during a time of both peace and heavy conflict. 

 

After a year of postponing movie releases, the excitement around these new films is overwhelming. The release of the 2021 anticipated flicks has a variety of genres that will likely suit and satisfy most cinema fanatics.
