Last Friday, the dating app Tinder announced that they would release a new tier, even higher than Tinder+, Tinder Gold, and Tinder Platinum. The new tier, Tinder Select, would function as an invite-only membership and be offered to less than 1% of the app’s users. Once invited, subscribers could decide to accept or reject this new offer. However, it’s not quite that simple. Tinder+ costs $7.99 a month, Tinder Gold costs $24.99 a month, and Tinder Platinum costs $29.99. Tinder Select would cost users $500 per month, and users offered the option of subscribing would first have to decide whether or not they want to pay such a hefty fee. But what perks does the upgrade have compared to the previous three tiers? What justifies such a significant price increase?
Tinder Select offers a surprisingly large amount of perks that the other three tiers don’t. Aside from being able to message people without “matching” with them, all of the other perks it offers are exclusive. In addition to accessing new features early, those who upgrade receive a profile “badge” that lets everyone else know they’re a member. The exclusives can also hide any ads and have an additional bonus of viewing any likes sent their way during the past week. Last but not least, upgraded members gain access to “select mode,” which allows them to view or be viewed by “sought-after” profiles. Supposedly, this is to aid in the creation of more exceptional connections.
This fourth subscription was created shortly after Tinder’s CEO changed. The current CEO, Bernard Kim, claims that implementing this new tier will help the company build revenue; that way, further innovations and ideas can be implemented later in the year.
Meanwhile, other services are getting the same ideas, as dating apps, music apps, and streaming services look to increase or add new subscription options within the coming year. The change in streaming service prices will undoubtedly affect the general public, as technology is only growing bigger each day.
With the cost of subscriptions on the rise, it’s essential for users to wonder what they’re willing to pay for and what they might not need as much. Spending an extra three dollars might not seem like much, but you might lose track of your spending when you are paying three dollars to several different streaming services. However, it’s probably easy for most people to disregard the idea of a $500 subscription.
