On December 15th, 2025, Hunterdon Central’s Board of Education met with a focus on recognizing student achievement, advancing long-term goals, addressing community concerns, and reflecting while the district closed out the calendar year. The meeting drew a large audience of educators, parents, and students who make up and represent Central’s community.
The meeting opened with presentations from educators to appreciate initiatives including student-run programs focused on leadership, teamwork, customer service, budgeting and financial literacy, sports, and other grant funded initiatives. Board members and attendees were able to give students recognition for their dedication and innovative approaches to improving and growing within Hunterdon Central.
The superintendent, Ms. Jessica Cangelosi-Hade, also provided a detailed overview of the district’s operations and future planning. Preparations for the 2026-2027 school year are already underway, with the early budget development aligned to long-term financial stability. One example of a planned project includes upcoming renovations to technology, engineering, and design labs. Additionally, proposals were made for various ideas including new turf, an auditorium renovation, and roof replacements, all underscoring the district’s investment in both educational excellence and student safety.
In preparation for the next academic year, the Central community was recently asked to vote on the calendar for the 2026-2027 school year. Ultimately, this meeting solidified the decision to begin the year prior to Labor Day, and set graduation for June 17 for the Class of 2027.
As change became an important theme of the meeting, the Board went on to recognize the results of the recent election, welcoming newly elected and outgoing members (who were honored for their years of dedicated service), with acknowledgements of their leadership roles and contributions to the board committees and district governance.
Other events during the meeting included the Board’s approval of the district’s annual audit, which reported no findings or recommendations, reinforcing financial accountability and oversight. The board also accepted foundation grants and donations supporting instructional programs and student initiatives, ensuring transparency in the use of funding external sources. Additionally, the superintendent announced upcoming outreach events for middle school families and confirmed dates for strategic planning sessions in early 2026, emphasizing continued public engagement and long term district planning.
Beyond the school, the public comments reflected a wide range of community perspectives, as residents raised concerns regarding campaign finance reports and the role of booster organizations, cancellations, and trends in student academic performance. Several speakers emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability and respectful conduct in the face of public trust. In response, the Board acknowledged the concerns and outlined steps to review financial reports, monitor booster activities, and assess academic trends more closely. They mentioned adherence to established policies and legal guidance, including ongoing consultation with the board counsel and underscored its commitment to transparency and accountability through formal communication. Following the public comment, the Board began consulting with the legal counsel on matters related to governance, compliance, and student issues, indicating that concerns raised by residents were taken under formal consideration. The meeting maintained a serious tone, with attendees carefully weighing each concern and taking every comment into consideration.
The meeting concluded with final public comment and an executive session addressing matters relating to litigation, personnel, and student discipline. Overall, the December meeting balanced recognition and reflection with forward-looking planning, underscoring the Board’s role in guiding the district through both celebration and challenge as it prepares for the year ahead.
