Pinecones, pumpkin spice, and Halloween candy galore. Fall is in the air! As November approaches, autumn is in full swing. However, many people have yet to get into the fall spirit. Sure, you can go to a haunted house, pick apples, or carve pumpkins, but what’s better than curling up with a good movie? Whether you like horror, animation, sci-fi, or romance, there’s a fall movie for you!
Family-Friendly Halloween
As we grow older, sometimes all we need is a good throwback. Or, if you have little siblings, a family-friendly movie is excellent! Looking for light jump scares and adventure? The 4-part Halloweentown is available to stream on Disney+ or Hulu. Another crowd favorite is Coraline, on Hulu or Amazon Prime Video! Central Sophomore Valerie Hernandez states, “Coraline has been my favorite Fall movie since I was a kid! I love how it’s spooky while still being an animation.” Whether or not you pick “Halloweentown” or “Coraline,” you’ll be in for a treat!
Horror
Love a good scare? Horror movies are all the rage this time of year. “No One Will Save You,” directed by Brian Duffield, is a new release that’s gained attention in the realm of horror films. It’s been available to watch on Hulu since September 2023. The film includes minimal dialogue, adding to the eeriness of it all. Next, if you love horror and need something with a few jumpscares, a great option is The Exorcist on Netflix. This movie follows a teenager trying to unravel the intentions behind a new, unwelcome town guest. Another great option, The Boogeyman on Hulu, has been a long-awaited arrival and has not disappointed! The film adaptation of Stephen King’s short story debuted in June 2023.
Football Season
Are you sitting in front of the screen every Sunday, watching your favorite team score? If so, consider watching Friday Night Lights for football season, a classic feel-good film set in the small town of Dillon, Texas. The film is readily available on Netflix. Another great option featuring football meets rocket science is October Sky, released in 1999. The movie still has its charm and can be found on Prime Video. Lastly, if you’re looking for something more modern, consider Prime Video’s BS High, a fascinating football documentary on fraud in high school football and the true story behind a fake nationally televised school team.
Animation
Though cartoons may be known as “little kid movies,” there’s nothing wrong with turning on a good animation. Coraline may be the best-known animated movie, but multiple HCRHS students stated that their favorite is still “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.” You might have played it in your kindergarten classroom. Still, all these years later, it never fails to bring a smile to everybody’s face. Another sophomore, Olivia Ost, commented, “Casper has been my favorite since I was a little kid.” So next time you can’t decide what to watch, consider something a little less scary, like Casper or Charlie Brown, to add a little more fun!
Fall TV Shows
Not into movies? Fall TV shows might be more your style. While Gilmore Girls might not be fall-themed, most agree it’s the perfect cozy show for the season. Following a mother and daughter duo, Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, the show will make you laugh, cry, and want to hug your mom. The classic Sabrina, The Teenage Witch, took the world by surprise in the 90s, but if you’re more into mythological creatures and the frightening tales of a teenage girl’s love life, try the reboot Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. No matter what you watch, you’re in for a delight!
Whether you are an avid film watcher or someone looking for an excuse to make popcorn, there are thousands of options. So curl up with a mug of hot apple cider, a pet, or a cozy blanket, and turn on the TV.
