Every great story begins with a spark of imagination. This year, the cast of Hunterdon Central’s Children’s Play invites you to step into a world where books become the adventure themselves. The upcoming production, A Journey Through the Pages, will be a heartwarming exploration of friendship, discovery, and the magic of reading.
Written by Brownwyn Downey and Siena Albanese, the play follows two friends, Avery and Lucy, on a fantastical quest. Avery, played by Jillian Belotti and Logan Mausert (double casted), insists that reading just isn’t for them. Lucy, portrayed by Isabella Robles and Mila Victorino, refused to take that as an answer. With determination and a little help from the local librarian, played by Caylen Wilson and Keira Wilson, Lucy takes Avery on a trip through different genres of books.
From fairytales to mysteries, adventures to comedies, the two girls encounter new friends and challenges at every turn. Along the way, Avery begins to realize that reading isn’t about forcing yourself into one section, but finding the story that speaks to you. The play invokes the idea that books can be doors to new worlds, friendships and discoveries.
The cast has been hard at work preparing for this production. Run-throughs have already begun during lunch periods, with after-school rehearsals starting soon. These rehearsals are filled with energy, laughter and dedication, bringing life to these characters. But the magic doesn’t end with the performances. The crew has been busy crafting sets that transport audiences into the pages of Avery and Lucy’s journey. From painted book covers to elaborate backdrops, every detail is designed to enchant the audience, transporting them into a library where stories come to life. The creative costumes also add a layer of creativity and fun, especially the appearance of inflatable cow suits, which prove that this play has surprises in store for everyone!
The cast and crew are not only preparing for school performances but also planning a special show specifically for family, siblings and friends to have a chance and see the hard work and dedication that has gone into this production. It’s a celebration of both the play itself and the team that makes it possible.
One of the most exciting parts of being in the Children’s Play is its upcoming tour. The cast will bring their performance to several local elementary schools, sharing the joy of theater and storytelling with the young kids.
On 12/16, 12/18, and 12/19 the cast will not only showcase the talent to our own students but inspire younger children to read in a new light. By blending theater with the theme of discovering books, the play encourages kids to explore stories of their own.
As the premier approaches, the cast continues to rehearse relentlessly, fine-tuning every scene and polishing every line, while the crew puts the final touches on sets and costumes to ensure that this production will be as visually stunning as it is engaging.
The future holds more than just performances: it holds the promise of inspiring audiences to embrace the joy of reading. For Avery, the journey may be about finding the right book. For the audience, it is about rediscovering the magic that stories bring into our lives.
At its core, A Journey through the Pages is more than just a children’s play. It’s a reminder of the importance of imagination, friendship, and persistence. Avery’s reluctance to read mirrors the struggles many children face, while Lucy’s encouragement shows the power of support and curiosity. Together, they prove that stories can change us, connect us, and open doors we never knew existed.
For Hunterdon Central’s Children’s Play cast, this production is a journey of collaboration. From rehearsals to set design every student involved is learning the value of teamwork, creativity and dedication. And when the curtain rises, their hard work will shine through in every scene. Come see what they’ve created December 11 and 12 at the Little Theater!
